In honor of Worldwide Press Freedom Day on Wednesday, May 3, AI chapters throughout the Southeast have "adopted" Yohannes and are trying to raise awareness about his plight, which was perhaps drowned out by the events of Sept. 11. Emily Grenesko, who serves as a "prisoner of conscience coordinator" for a local AI chapter that meets downtown, is hoping that people throughout the Lowcountry....

Over 1,000 members of minority churches in Eritrea, including up to 19 pastors, are currently detained. There have been frequent reports of the security forces torturing detained evangelical church members, who have continued worshipping despite the ban, in an attempt to force them to abandon their faith. The security forces arrested a wedding party of over 200, including the bride and groom on 28 May, in the capital, Asmara. All are reported to be members of the Meseret Christos church, which is banned in Eritrea. They are at grave risk of being tortured to force them to renounce their faith. Amnesty International believes they are prisoners of conscience, detained solely for the peaceful exercise of their right to freedom of religion.
