In honor of Worldwide Press Freedom Day on Wednesday, May 3, AI chapters throughout the Southeast have "adopted" Yohannes and are trying to raise awareness about his plight, which was perhaps drowned out by the events of Sept. 11. As proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993, this day is designated as World Press Freedom Day and its aim is to remind us all - governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations as well as civil society – of the crucial role a free press plays in strengthening democracies and fostering development around the world. On this occasion, we, in the EMDHR, would like to bring forward the consistent suppression of freedom of expression and press in Eritrea.   more »

The VoEP controversy over the past few days has left sour taste in everybody’s mouth. If anyone is gloating over this unfortunate experience then they either don’t belong in the opposition camp or have little understanding of the overall challenge that we, Eritreans, face.   more »

Their messages are the same, that the Ethiopian regime has neglected the Eritrean opposition camp and that the Ethiopian government should seriously reconsider assisting the opposition camp in vigorous manner.   more »

The recent State Department human rights report on Eritrea doesn’t begin to express the extent of human rights violations in Eritrea. Many Eritreans and various international organizations have been writing more disturbing reports of human rights abuse in Eritrea than the State Department report.   more »

First, these same critics correctly point out that the vast majority of Eritreans won’t accept unfair treatment of fellow Eritreans, i.e. religious/ethnic based government. If these critics truly place their faith on the Eritrean people, there is no reason to sound the alarm at this point in time when our efforts should be focused on removing the PFDJ regime, and equally discussing the organizational challenges we face within the opposition camp.   more »

EMDHR successfully conducted its Second Annual Congress on 26 March 2006 in Pretoria, Republic of South Africa under the motto … “Challenging our perception: Towards building an enlightened and empowered society.” Although each and every member of the EMDHR was supposed to participate in the Congress, due to financial, proxy and other factors the various Chapters send only their elected representatives who will, at the same time, serve as members of the General Council of the EMDHR for the next year.   more »
